Government considering phasing out electricity subsidies beyond initial target of 2019
Phasing out electricity subsidies could go beyond 2019, Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker said, according to Al Mal. Electricity subsidy reform began since 2014 and the subsidy was supposed to be removed completely by 2019. Shaker said the delay in implementing the reform was due to the EGP devaluation and the increase in spare parts, maintenance, and production prices. Shaker refused to comment on potential electricity price changes or on the possibility of introducing new consumption tranches. (Al Mal, Enterprise)
