Privatisation to cover all state-owned hospitals; Shura asks for universal insurance
The Ministry of Health is planning on privatising all state-owned hospitals through establishing public companies that will hold the ownership of those hospitals and their human resources. The move aims at increasing the quality of the services offered, while rationalising the government’s spending. The healthcare committee at the Shura Council had embraced a proposal by a Parliamentary member for accelerating the universal healthcare act, to ensure its implementation prior to privatising the state-owned hospitals. The committee has voiced its concerns that privatising state-owned hospitals might influence profit-oriented hospitals’ motivation to earn profits to avoid high-cost chronic cases, which requires ensuring a universal healthcare act is in place before implementing the privatisation.
