The government has doubled the subway (Cairo Metro) ticket price to EGP2 on Friday, Minister of Transportation, Hisham Arafaat, said after several government officials had warned for several months that the service would stop unless the ticket price is increased. Fares for the elderly and people with disabilities remain unchanged at EGP1, but are 50% higher for school and college students and 100% higher for government employees. The hike was approved by Cabinet, according to the Minister. Cairo Metro Authority loses EGP200mn per year (cEGP20mn/month) and has accumulated EGP500mn in debts to ministries and companies, Arafat said, adding that the fee hike would help meet these dues until June 2018. President Sisi has previously stated that the actual cost of a metro journey is cEGP10, with the state subsidy covering the difference. An estimated 3.5 million people use the Cairo subway daily.
