Expansion of Muscat International Airport is set for completion before year-end

The new terminal at Muscat International Airport is set to be completed before the end of December 2016, according to Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications. The new terminal was 86% completed in December 2015, showing a delay to the original completion date of early 2014. The delay was attributed to delays by the contractors, amongst other reasons. The new terminal aim to accommodate c.12 million passengers. Some 1,400 planes flew over Oman’s skies in 2015 (+10% Y-o-Y), according to Mohammed bin Nasser bin Ali Al Zaabi, CEO of Oman’s Public Authority for Civil Aviation.   According to MEED Project, this contract was worth USD1,834 million and is being executed by a consortium composed of: Bachtel Corporation, Suhail Bahwan Group, Enka Teknik. The project is currently 92% complete, showing decent progress YTD. This contract is part of a multi-packaged project worth a combined value of USD4,898 million. We note that, according to MEED Projects, Galfar Engineering and Contracting (Galfar) was awarded a USD174 million package within the project, in November 2013, related to the construction of a building dedicated to in-flight catering services. The Galfar project is 67% complete and is due for hand-over in December 2016. The revenue recognition of the remaining portion of this contract in 2016 will represent c10% of our revenue estimate for the year. (Arabian Business, MEED Projects, Mai Attia, Sara Boutros)
