Etisalat Group’s [ETEL.AD] subsidiary in Nigeria, Etisalat Nigeria is suing MTN Nigeria over the acquisition of local internet service provider (ISP), Visafone. Earlier this year, MTN announced sealing a deal with businessman, Jim Ovia to acquire Visafone, a leading code division multiple access (CDMA) network provider which should allow MTN to boost the quality of its broadband internet services and data speeds through Visafone’s 800 MHz spectrum. According to Etisalat, the acquisition will further solidify MTN’s foothold in the retail market and will give MTN more power over other operators in the market. Etisalat based its argument on the fact that MTN was declared dominant by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in 2013 and remains dominant in the wholesale, leased line and retail voice markets.
