Commodity subsidy programme to cover three products only as of 1 April
Minister of Supply, Ali Al Moselhy, said only cooking oil, rice, and sugar (worth EGP21/month) will be covered under the commodity subsidy programme as of 1 April. Currently, welfare recipients can choose to use their EGP21/month subsidy ration to purchase 50 subsidised commodities, including chicken and meat. State-owned grocers participating in the system will begin dispensing packages containing the three products, while other products will be sold at market prices. The move aims to provide subsidies to those in need -- the majority of those who need these three commodities only-- to curb subsidies fraud and leakage into the black market, Al Moselhy said, adding that 71mn citizens are subsidy beneficiaries.
